We already have websites that do a great job of pointing to the what, when, where of our towns. I want to focus on the Whos here — the neighbors who spin the threads that make up the weave of this special place — faces we see every day, but maybe don’t know. We don’t know what we don’t know, right?
Quite a long time ago, I was able to do this sort of writing for a nature magazine I edited. And then later for companies that design beautiful things.
I loved everything about that work — spending time with someone I’ve never met, learning as much as I could about what made them, describing their work and their scene, discovering what drives them, and then writing profiles about them. It’s my favorite thing to do. My very favorite.
I wrote profiles on some famous people, — Elliot Porter, Roger Tory Peterson, Frank Gehry, Marion Nestle — and people you may never have heard about, but in every single case, I discovered people intensely driven by what they love. All of them are people propelled by a goal to put something good into the world. I’ve written about photographers and fine artists and designers, about writers and dancers and scientists.
My premise is that people, their talents and drive, make a community.
So, little community, I’m going to write about you. Because that’s what drives me. Stay tuned.
So excited to hear about this adventure! Thanks for inviting us along!!
Enticing intention–to chronicle the characters of our quirky community. What secrets will be revealed?
Remarkable! What a wonderful idea. It will be our own “Our Town” only the people will still be with us.
So wonderful!
Can not wait to see where this is going!!!
Marvelous! The History Center should be alerted to this. I’m looking forward to everything you learn!
